Interview with Robyn of Glory Designs
Please introduce yourself
I am Robyn, the owner of Glory Designs. I have been married 29 years to my wonderful husband Don. We have 9 beautiful children, 6 boys and 3 girls. Our oldest is 28 and our youngest is 10. We *only* have 5 children left at home. Some are married and some are away at college. We have a 2yr old granddaughter. I am excited that I get to sew for a little girl again! We have homeschooled our children off and on for 23 yrs. Don and I met in college where we were both music majors. I also minored in science and attended nursing school. Don is an accomplished musician and when he is not off at a catastrophe (he is an insurance adjuster and has go to many hurricanes, earthquakes... etc. He is in Florida right now) he is helping to lead worship at our church and also does a lot of teaching. I oversee the Media ministry.
How did you get started in digitizing?
With 9 children I have done a lot of sewing... lots! I love all types of textile and fiber art. I also have a lot of experience with computer graphic design. In 1995 when I saw my first home embroidery machine I was mesmerized. I purchased my Deco 600 which has been the only embroidery machine I have owned... until this week. I now own a commercial embroidery machine. Being a computer nut I dove right into digitizing my own designs. Having knowledge of graphics software helped me a lot. I put Glory Designs on the internet in 1998. I have many Christian designs as a result of one of my customers wanting designs she could put on church banners.
Has your business changed since you started digitizing?
Oh yes! I have learned many new digitizing skills and have used several different digitizing software programs. Now with having a commercial machine I will be able to test my own large or jumbo designs. I also am planning on expanding my business to embroidering. I have taught one of my daughters digitizing. As the embroidery end of Glory Designs expands I am sure it will become a family business. When my husband finishes this round of hurricanes he will be ending his Adjusting career and will be ordained as a Pastor. All the more reason to expand our business!
What is on the horizon for Glory Designs?
I am finishing up a set of designs suitable for the Christmas tree. Some churches refer to these as Chrismons... Monograms of Christ. My daughter that is learning digitizing is also an excellent artist and she is drawing some fantastic designs for me. Those will be digitized soon! I have a lot on my drawing board - if I could only digitize time!
Closing thoughts
I have been blessed with wonderful customers. I absolutely love the Stitchery Mall. Mickey and Carol are wonderful and my fellow digitizers are amazing!
Blessings!
